About the Artist

On first view, Duane’s work is quiet, with a seeming simplicity of line expanding, here and there, into form. Yet emanating from the controlled, painterly layers of conscientious brushwork is an intense sense of focus, attention to color, desire for connection and invitation to contemplation. Duane earned his MFA from University of Wisconsin-Madison in the 1980s. But only since 2000 has he been able to devote his days solely to painting. His works begin with, and are inspired by, the act of drawing. When completed, his minimalist works retain a physicality that references the process of painting and an industrial aesthetic that lends the paintings muted strength.
