About the Artist
Although best known for her fabric sculptures, costumes, creative millinery, and ceramics, Candy has recently been experimenting with iPhone photography and apps. The results are fantastical images that blend the realistic and the abstract to create magical landscapes of color, movement, and mystery. Lush and lyrical, the vivid work takes digital imagery into an inventive new realm. “My pictures are about joy,” Candy says, “and we all need joy, color, light, depth, and fun in our lives.”
Candy starts by shooting images with her iPhone while at her family cabin, which is located between the Boundary Waters and Voyageurs National Park. She also captures her initial images while walking her dogs around the city, and while “searching for the wild places in between buildings,” she says.
She then puts her images through ON1 Photo RAW to fracture and resize specific aspects, and then she puts the images through a program on Photoshop and twists the pixels to give the image a painterly effect. “I’m trying to create an aliveness and bring the spiritual to the forefront,” she says. Viewers can simply delight in the color and choreography of her images, or spend time delving deeply into the tangled underbrush or starry sky, leafy texture or rippling water to explore the meaning and mythology contained within her images.
