About the Artist
“All those experiences living in a farming community, being close to machinery in a town where there wasn’t a lot to do, is what led me to be an artist,” says Kyle, who describes his work as mixed-media sculpture and collage. His intricate objects blend steampunk and science-fiction sensibilities with the mechanical wonder associated with antique toys. Meanings are juxtaposed as he re-purposes objects, scrap material and constructed forms in creations equal part animal, machine and human. On a recent edition of Minnesota Original, Kyle talked about his “make-do” aesthetic. He also insisted he’s not a “junk sculptor,” because he transforms found objects into something entirely new that fulfills his vision. Kyle was recently awarded a Minnesota State Arts Board Artist Initiative Grant for that vision.
